Eye Injuries that Can Become Catastrophic

A serious injury does not have to involve a head injury or spinal cord damage to be considered catastrophic. A catastrophic injury is one that can affect every aspect of someone’s life in a permanent way. A permanent eye injury, for example, can be catastrophic and it can have a devastating impact on the quality of the victim’s life.
A catastrophic eye injury typically involves a permanent loss of vision in one or both eyes. Common causes of catastrophic eye injuries include chemical exposure, traumatic iritis, corneal abrasions, orbital blowout fractures, foreign bodies in the eye and lacerations.
Chemical exposure eye injuries are typically minor and could even involve commonly used substances such as soap or sunscreen. There are, however, chemicals such as sulfuric acid or ammonia that can do permanent damage. Another cause of a catastrophic eye injury through chemical exposure includes over exposure to tear gas, pepper spray, mace or hair spray. Traumatic iritis and corneal abrasions both occur when the victim is poked in the eye. A blunt object such as a bat or a fist striking the iris can cause traumatic iritis. A corneal abrasion occurs when a sharp object such as a finger, stick, or pencil pokes the eye.
Hyphemas and orbital blowout fractures involve a substantial force caused by a blunt object that results in serious damage around the eye. Specifically, an orbital blowout fracture happens when the facial bones around the eye are fractured, and a hyphema is when there is bleeding in the eye.
Foreign body injuries and lacerations are two types of eye injuries that are typically minor but can be catastrophic. Getting a shard of metal stuck in your eye, for example, can become catastrophic if it does permanent damage by puncturing the eye. Lacerations range from scratches to devastating cuts on the eye.
Victims of these types of accidents deserve financial compensation for the pain and suffering they endure, especially if the injuries were the result of someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing.
