At least 15 people were reported injured in a collision between a U-Haul truck and a livery bus in Downtown Brooklyn the afternoon of April 14. According to a report on AMNY.com, the accident occurred on Livingston Street and Elm Place in Downtown Brooklyn when a U-Haul driver rear-ended the bus. The bus was loaded with passengers at the time of the crash. Police say 15 people were injured as a result of the crash.
While the U-Haul driver declined medical attention, the victims on the bus were transported to various hospitals with injuries, which were not life-threatening. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. No arrests have been made or citations issued. We wish all the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Common Causes of Rear-End Accidents
Rear-end accidents are one of the most common types of car accidents, often resulting from driver negligence (carelessness). Drivers who are distracted by their mobile phones, adjusting the radio, eating, or even daydreaming may fail to notice the slowing or stopped vehicle in front of them in time to avoid a collision.
Another common cause is tailgating. Following another vehicle too closely reduces the driver’s reaction time and increases the risk of a rear-end collision, especially in situations where the vehicle that is ahead slows down suddenly. Speeding is also often a significant factor in rear-end accidents. Driving at high speeds reduces the driver’s ability to stop in time to avoid a collision with a slowing or stopped vehicle.
Poor road conditions such as wet or icy roads can also contribute to rear-end accidents. Reduced traction and longer stopping distances can make it difficult for drivers to stop in time to avoid a collision with a vehicle in front of them. Driving under the influence is another common cause of rear-end accidents. Impaired drivers have reduced reaction times and impaired judgment, increasing the risk of a collision with a slowing or stopped vehicle.
Injuries in Rear-End Accidents
Rear-end accidents can result in a range of injuries, varying in severity depending on the speed of the vehicles involved, the angle of the collision, and the use of seat belts and other safety features. Here are some of the most common injuries in rear-end accidents:
- Whiplash: This injury occurs when the force of the impact causes the neck to jerk forward and backward rapidly. Symptoms of whiplash may include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and dizziness.
- Back injuries: These are common in rear-end accidents, particularly injuries to the spinal discs, muscles, and ligaments. These injuries can cause chronic pain, limited mobility, and long-term health problems.
- Head injuries: These may include concussions and traumatic brain injuries that occur if the head strikes the steering wheel, dashboard, or other objects inside the vehicle during the collision.
- Facial injuries: These types of injuries may occur due to the deployment of the airbag or impact with the steering wheel or dashboard, resulting in bruises, lacerations, or fractures.
