Concussions Should Be Taken Seriously

Researchers and medical experts are changing the once conventional view of looking at a concussion as a “minor” brain injury. Recently, the media spotlight – no doubt stemming in a large part from the injury suffered by the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton – focused on just how these injuries occur and the types of serious complications that can arise from a concussion.
According to news reports, Clinton suffered a concussion in early December while battling a stomach flu. Days later she was rushed to the hospital where doctors found that she was suffering from a rare and dangerous blood clot near the brain. Doctors said Clinton had a clot in a vein that takes blood away from the brain.
Concussions Can Become Deadly
Hillary Clinton’s case certainly underscores the fact that concussions or head injuries should never be taken lightly. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year. Other causes for concussions include auto accidents, work-related injuries, falls and acts of violence. Some of the most common symptoms of concussions include blurred vision, loss of balance, confusion and loss of consciousness.
Taking Precautions
It is very important that individuals, especially those who are involved in contact sport, guard against repeat concussions. If you have suffered a concussion during play, stop and sit it out. The brain needs time to heal properly. So, rest is important. Athletes and children must be closely monitored by coaches upon resuming play.
Repeat concussions can cause cumulative effects on the brain including brain swelling, irreversible brain damage, long-term disabilities or even death. It is highly advisable that those who have suffered concussions do not return to normal activity, unless with a doctor’s clearance. If your head injuries were caused by someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing, you can seek compensation for your injuries and damages.
