What is Paralysis?
Paralysis is the loss of function of one or more muscles. It is generally accompanied by the loss of sensation in the affected area and is most often caused by damage to the spinal cord or central nervous system.
The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that transmits information between the brain and the rest of the body, and when it is injured, the system becomes damaged resulting in physical impairment.
Traumatic blows to the head, neck, or back usually cause spinal cord injuries that can fracture or dislocate the vertebrae. This crushes the nerve cells carrying information. The specific effects of spinal cord injuries (which doctors categorize as either “complete” or “incomplete”) depend on the location and severity of the damage. People who suffer from complete spinal cord injuries will lack all sensation and movement below the damaged vertebrae, while those with incomplete injuries will retain some use of their limbs.
