construction accidentA worker at 4 World Trade Center was seriously injured in a construction accident after a metal pipe that was pumping concrete became dislodged and hit him in the face. According to a report in DNAinfo.com, the worker who was employed with Corporate Electric suffered facial injuries after the overhead pipe on the tower’s fifth floor came loose and struck him. The injured worker was transported to a local hospital and is said to be in stable condition. Another worker on the site said the pipe was pressurized and pouring concrete when it gave way. The investigation into this construction accident is ongoing.
Prior Construction Accidents
There have been a number of construction site accidents at the World Trade Center site in recent months. In August, a construction worker at 3 World Trade Center suffered major injuries after falling 15 feet to the ground while installing a steel beam. In July, an ironworker was severely injured at 4 World Trade Center after a steel beam struck him. Also at the same location and less than a month before that incident, in late June, a steel reinforcing bar impaled a worker. A day before this June work accident, a crane knocked a 53-foot, 24-ton steel beam into windows on the 46th floor of the building.
Causes and Compensation Issues
After any construction accident, it is important to determine what caused it and how it could have been prevented. There are several questions that must be asked. Were there any safety violations at the site? Was the worker provided proper job and safety training? Was the worker being properly supervised? Was the worker given the necessary tools and safety equipment?
In cases involving on-the-job injuries, victims and their families can seek workers’ compensation benefits, which cover medical expenses and a portion of lost wages. In some cases, victims may be able to seek additional compensation through a third-party claim. Such claims may be filed against a party other than an employer such as a general contractor, sub contractor, property owner or the manufacturer of a defective product, etc.
