Understanding the Significance of Brain Injury Awareness Month

Posted in Catastrophic Injury and tagged by Ken Wilhelm

brain March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. It reminds us about the significance of understanding how to prevent these types of potentially catastrophic injuries. A traumatic brain injury can happen at any age. It is most often caused by a significant fall, an auto accident, an act of violence or even a sports injury. Whether it’s a concussion, a skull fracture, a blood clot or a brain bleed, victims may suffer from long-term consequences including, but not limited to, loss of speech, memory loss, inability to focus, mood swings, behavioral changes, etc.

Brain Injury Statistics
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 2.4 million children and adults in the United States suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. More than 5.3 million children and adults in the United States live with a lifelong disability as a result of a brain injury. The leading causes of brain injuries are falls (35 percent), auto accidents (17 percent) and striking or being struck by an object (16.5 percent). A brain injury may occur on the highway, on the street, in school, in the workplace or even at home.
Brain Injury Association’s Campaign
The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) kicked off a campaign this month to recognize and support more than 5.3 million Americans who are living with brain injury-related disabilities. The theme for BIAA’s 2015 to 2017 campaign is: Not Alone. This campaign provides a platform to educate the general public about the prevalence of brain injury and create awareness about the needs of people with brain injuries. The campaign also facilitates outreach within the brain injury community to help eliminate stigma, empower survivors and their families, and connect them with resources and support that are available.
