A possible new treatment for traumatic brain injury has shown promise in lab research and could end up helping millions of TBI victims including soldiers, auto accident victims and athletes. According to a report in ACS Nano, traumatic brain injuries, which occur as the result of a violent blow to the head, cuts off oxygen supply to the brain killing the cells and causing irreversible damage. This groundbreaking research done with nanoparticles called PEG-HCCS proved successful, scientists say.
Research Can Potentially Help Victims
In lab rats, the nanoparticles acted like antioxidants, rapidly restoring blood flow to the brain following resuscitation after a traumatic brain injury. The reason brain injuries cause so much damage is due to the fact that although the brain accounts for only 2 percent of a person’s body weight, it claims about 20 percent of his or her oxygen supply. This is why even a mild head injury such as a concussion can have serious consequences when it comes to certain brain functions.
This research can be extremely helpful to improve patient health during resuscitative care. For example, auto accident victims or injured soldiers can particularly benefit from this advancement as traumatic brain injuries that formerly could have led to permanent brain damage or even fatalities are now potentially treatable.
TBI Statistics
Brain injuries are a sad reality in the United States. According to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. Brain injuries are a contributing factor to a third of all injury-related fatalities nationwide. The CDC estimated in the year 2000, the most recent year for which the information is available, that direct medical costs and indirect costs (lost productivity) involving TBI added to an estimated $76.5 billion in the United States.
Compensation for Workers
While new research offers a ray of hope to brain injury victims, there is no question that these victims and their families face significant physical, financial and emotional burdens. When the brain injury occurred as the result of someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing, victims can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited, to medical expenses, loss of past and future wages, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, rehabilitation, etc.
