Two foreign exchange students were killed and three other students from Ohio State University were injured when the SUV in which they were traveling went off the roadway and crashed in Clinton Township, New Jersey. According to a news article in Lehigh Valley Live, the car accident happened students were driving back to Columbus, Ohio, from New York City. One student was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. Another student suffered a fatal head injury in the crash. The surviving students were treated at a local hospital for their injuries. Police are still investigating the crash. Officials say preliminary investigations show that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.
According to the New York Department of Vehicles (DMV), there are more than 323,000 accidents in the state every year. There are about 1,220 fatalities and another 139,000 injury accidents. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a report last year, which shows that drowsy drivers are responsible for one out of six fatal accidents and one in eight injury accidents. Men and drivers between ages 16 and 24 were twice as likely to drive while tired and cause a crash, the study showed.
Driving drowsy can be considered negligent driving. Someone who causes an accident because he or she was sleepy may be held liable for any injuries or property damage caused. Driver negligence is described as anything the driver should not be doing while operating a vehicle, which includes getting behind the wheel when too tired, speeding, or drunk driving.
Driving while drowsy or fatigued can cause a motorist to veer off the road and flip over, hit a tree, or crash. Often times, these accidents can result in moderate or serious injuries such as head trauma, broken bones, internal bleeding, and even death. If you have been injured in an accident caused by a negligent driver, you may be able to seek compensation including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages, and past and future pain and suffering, etc.
