Emergency workers had to rescue three people from a Long Island home after a BMW sport utility vehicle crashed into the home. According to CBS New York, the auto accident occurred on Ocean Avenue in Malvern. The BMW apparently lost control, drove up onto the sidewalk and slammed into the house. The residents living in the home were upstairs asleep when the accident happened. The driver, a man in his 20s, told police he was heading to work but officials said it appears he may have been speeding.
The man didn’t appear to be under the influence of alcohol but it is unclear why he lost control of the car. The crash was so intense it pushed the fireplace and part of the chimney through a wall and into the backyard. Emergency crews had to extract the man from the BMW. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The intersection where this accident happened can be confusing to some drivers and the homeowner said a few months ago her neighbor’s home was slammed into by a vehicle.
Accidents Caused by Excessive Speed
This news report says speeding may have played a role in this accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 30 percent of all fatal crashes nationwide involve a speeding driver. Speeding makes it difficult for drivers to adapt to changes in traffic patterns, increases the amount of time it takes to slow a vehicle down, and makes it easier for a driver to lose control of a vehicle. Speeding is negligence because it shows a disregard for the safety and well being for others on the roadway. Speeding can lead to rear-end collisions, head-on collisions, or broadside crashes, all of which have the potential to cause catastrophic or even fatal injuries.
Compensation for Injured Victims
Victims of car accidents can seek compensation from at-fault drivers to cover damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, loss of wages and benefits, past and future pain and suffering, emotional distress, etc.
