Statistics Show Decline in Fatal Car Accidents in New York

Traffic AccidentDeadly traffic accidents are on the decline in New York. According to NY1.com, there have been 237 fatal traffic accidents in 2011, which is a 40 percent drop compared to 10 years ago. The number of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents is also going down, according to the report.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg credits the Department of Transportation Commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, and the police department with these drops in numbers. According to Sadik-Khan, there have been 150 projects in the last year that have helped improve motorist and pedestrian safety in the city. Some projects include pedestrian islands, more crosswalks, and re-timing signals. While these types of accidents are dropping, the number of bicycle accident fatalities has not changed in recent years. Bloomberg added he wants to push for state legislation that would add more red light cameras in the city to help catch speeding drivers and red light runners.
Even though more safety measures are being put in place, numerous accidents continue to happen in the Big Apple. Driver negligence is instrumental in causing accidents that involve other motorists and pedestrians. Examples of driver negligence include driving while intoxicated, distracted driving, and violating the rules of the road, etc. In some cases, other factors such as road conditions or a vehicle malfunction may also lead to a traffic accident.
Injuries associated with traffic accidents can be minor, moderate, or serious. Injuries that are commonly sustained in car accidents include broken bones, head trauma, back injuries, or even death. Families that lose a loved one in a fatal accident face a lifetime of grief as well as various immediate expenses including funeral costs and lost future income, etc.
