Six People Injured in South Bronx Street Intersection Car Accident

A man who was ejected from a vehicle was among six victims taken to the hospital after two cars collided at a South Bronx street intersection. According to an NBC New York news report, the crash occurred at the intersection of Jerome Avenue and East 172nd Street. The incident involved four people who were riding in a minivan and two people in a black livery cab.
Witnesses said the minivan ran a red light on Jerome Avenue and slammed into the livery cab, before hitting a tree. A man sustained severe injuries after being thrown from a vehicle after the crash. He was one of two people transported to a local hospital in serious condition. The other occupants of the vehicles were also taken to the medical center with non-life-threatening injuries. No summonses or arrests were reported pending an official investigation.

Street Intersection Crashes
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that car accident or vehicle collisions occur at intersections because these are the locations where two or more roads cross each other and activities such as stopping for lights and stop signs, turning left, crossing over and turning right have the potential for conflicts resulting in crashes.
About 43 percent of auto accidents that occur at street intersections are related to one of these issues, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Intersections constitute only a small part of the overall highway system. Yet, crashes at street intersections comprise more than 50 percent of all crashes in urban areas and more than 30 percent in rural areas.
Why Intersection Crashes Occur
A number of factors contribute to street intersection crashes and many of them involve driver negligence:
• A number of drivers fail to yield the right of way to vehicles or pedestrians at street intersections and this may lead to devastating crashes.
• When drivers make unsafe turns while turning right, left or making a U-turn, a major injury collision may occur.
• Motorists are required to stop at intersections for red lights and stop signs. When a driver disobeys the rules of the road and fails to stop for a red light or stop sign, there is a risk of a street intersection crash.
• Driving at an excessive speed can also be dangerous while approaching an intersection. Drivers should be cautious while approaching an intersection and be prepared to stop at any time, be it for other vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians.
Types of Car Accidents
Depending on the position of the vehicles, there may be a number of different types of crashes that occur at street intersections:
• Head on crashes: These collisions occur when the fronts of two vehicles collide. This type of crash often results in major traumatic injuries including head and spinal cord injuries.
• T-bone crash: These types of collisions are also known as side-impact or broadside crashes when the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another. These collisions also have the potential to cause major injuries or fatalities.
• Rear-end collisions: When the front of one vehicle strikes the rear of another, it is known as a rear-end crash. These are common at street intersections especially in cases where a car is unable to stop in time to avoid colliding with another vehicle that is stopped at a light.
• Rollover crashes: When two vehicles collide at a high rate of speed, vehicles may roll over. Often in these cases, vehicle occupants are ejected and tend to suffer catastrophic or even fatal injuries.
