Raw Sprouts from NYC Supplier Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

beansprouts Raw sprouts have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 62 people from 10 states. According to an Associated Press news report, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced that the outbreak was concentrated on the East Coast. Also, those affected fell ill with salmonella poisoning that has been traced to bean sprouts sold by supplier in New York City. Wonton Foods Inc. of Brooklyn has agreed to stop production of the bean sprouts for now.
This is one of three recent outbreaks linked to raw sprouts. Two listeria deaths and three illnesses were associated with mung bean sprouts in the Midwest over the summer and 19 E. coli illnesses were linked to clover sprouts mostly in Western states in May. Raw sprouts are often a source of food-borne illnesses because of the moist, warm conditions in which they are grown. Since the mid-1990s there have been more than 30 food poisoning outbreaks associated with raw and slightly-cooked sprouts. The illnesses associated with the most recent outbreak were reported in 10 states including New York.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infections
Each year, there are about 42,000 reported cases of salmonellosis in the United States. But CDC officials believe that the actual number of infections may be 29 times greater because most infections are not reported. Children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are most likely to have severe infections. The CDC estimates that about 400 people die each year as a result of acute salmonellosis.
Most people who are infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and some persons recover without treatment. However, other people may suffer from diarrhea so severe that hospitalization may be necessary. In these patients, salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the victim is treated with antibiotics.
Compensation for Food Poisoning Victims
Victims of food poisoning can seek compensation from the at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, diagnostic tests, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Negligent food manufacturers and sellers, etc. can be held financially responsible for the injury and suffering their products cause.
