Queens Boulevard Bike Lane and Pedestrian Path Improvements Near Completion

Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed off on the fourth and final stage of the ongoing redesign of Queens Boulevard. According to a report in the Queens Chronicle, the project when completed will include two miles of bike lanes, a redesign of traffic lanes and improvements to the section between Yellowstone Boulevard and Ascan Avenue that enhance pedestrian safety. A statement released by the mayor’s office said the work will give “new life” to the roadway that was known for more than a decade as “the Boulevard of Death” and will prevent a number of tragic bicycle accidents and pedestrian accidents.

What the Improvements Will Bring

The fourth and final phase, which is part of Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero Plan, includes a pedestrian path along the medians between the service road and the main roadway. Other safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists include new and upgraded crosswalks at intersections and between median malls. There will also be new stop controls at slip ramp access points to allow for safer pedestrian and bicycle crossings as well as elongated left-turn bays for simpler, safer turns and better vehicle processing.

In response to concerns expressed by residents and businesses in the area that bike lanes have cut off access, the project will also include new truck loading zones and additional hours at existing commercial loading zones to improve curbside access. Borough officials say they expect the Queens Boulevard redesign to “dramatically improve safety for all of the pedestrians, motorists and cyclists who use this busy thoroughfare.” The next step, they say, is to extend the effort into Jamaica from the end of Queens Boulevard.

Injuries and Compensation

A number of bicycle accidents in New York City are still caused by negligent (careless) drivers. Bicycle accidents often result in major injuries to riders such as brain trauma, spinal cord injuries, multiple broken bones or fractures and internal organ damage. Victims who have been injured in bicycle accidents can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.

Families of deceased bicycle accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as lost future income, funeral costs, medical expenses, pain and suffering, etc. An experienced personal injury lawyer will be able to guide you through what can quickly become a complex process and help you maximize the compensation you receive.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a bicycle accident, there are a number of steps you would be well advised to take in order to protect your rights. File a police report and make sure you get a copy of the report for your records. Your New York bicycle accident lawyer can also help you obtain a copy of this report.

It is important that you get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries. This helps establish a record of the injuries you suffered and the treatment you have received since. Make sure you preserve all documents including receipts of expenses and record of lost wages. Contact an experienced New York bicycle accident lawyer who will help protect your rights and ensure that you receive maximum compensation for your losses.
