Pedestrians Injured in Brooklyn Hit-and-Run Crash

hitandrun Two pedestrians were injured, one critically, in a Brooklyn hit-and-run crash. According to a CBS news report, the driver of a vehicle struck the two victims and drove away without even slowing down. The incident occurred on Flatbush Avenue at Avenue U in Brooklyn in front of the Kings Plaza shopping center. A 50-year-old woman was reported in critical condition while a 47-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Bystanders, including a nurse who was shopping at a nearby store stopped to help the injured pedestrians.

Driver Failed to Stop
Eyewitnesses said the pedestrians were crossing the street when the speeding vehicle crashed right into them. The driver didn’t stop and fled the scene. The vehicle is described as a gray dollar van with a red stripe on the side and a missing mirror. The side view mirror was also ripped off by the impact of the crash, police said.
Officials are hoping that the mirror will help them track down the vehicle and the driver. Neighbors said Flatbush Avenue is a busy road and a dangerous street for pedestrians. Others also said drivers often tend to speed on the road. The man and woman who were hit were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. The investigation is still ongoing.
Leaving the Scene of an Accident
It is illegal under New York law to leave the scene of a car accident. Motorists are required to stop immediately, wait for authorities to arrive, report the incident and exchange information (driver’s license, insurance, etc.) with other parties involved in the collision. Drivers are also required to do what they can to assist the injured victims. Often it is the pedestrians who suffer severe if not fatal injuries in such collisions.
Injured hit-and-run accident victims and the families of deceased victims suffer emotionally and financially as they struggle to deal with unforeseen expenses such as medical bills, loss of income and funeral preparations. In hit-and-run cases, there are several parties that may be held financially responsible. The driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties. This is true even if the owner was not driving the vehicle when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer may also be held accountable. In these types of cases, victims are able to seek compensation for their losses.
Steps to Take after a Hit-and-Run Crash
It is important for victims of hit-and-run crashes to protect their rights after a collision by taking a number of steps. File a police report right away and obtain a signed copy for your own records. Collect as much evidence as possible from the scene including photographs and contact information for eyewitnesses. Preserve physical evidence such as torn or bloody and/or stained clothing. If you are injured and unable to remain at the scene, request a friend or family member to help get the evidence and information. Get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries. Preserve all evidence and keep track of workdays missed, invoices and receipts connected with the accident and injury. Compensation for Injured Victims
Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and hit-and-run crashes may be able to seek and obtain compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. In cases where the driver is not identified or apprehended, hit-and-run victims can seek compensation from the uninsured motorist clause of their own auto insurance policy as well, or victims may be able to recover money from a quasi-state agency.
