A new study shows that the brain continues to show signs of injury even months after symptoms of a concussion such as dizziness, headaches and memory loss go away. According to HealthDay News, the study was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in the Nov. 20 online edition of the journal Neurology. The study compares 50 concussion patients with the same number of healthy people. Researchers found that the brains of those suffering concussions showed abnormalities four months later – even after their symptoms had eased to some degree.
The findings may sway conventional thinking about when it is safe to resume normal physical activities that could produce another concussion, the study’s authors said. This is particularly true of young athletes who suffer concussions and believe they can get out to the field again because they feel that they are healed. This study provides further evidence that although concussions are classified as mild traumatic brain injuries, their effects may last for a much longer time.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion is considered a “mild traumatic brain injury” that occurs from a sudden blow to the head or body. The symptoms of a concussion can range from headache and blurry vision to memory loss and confusion. Those who suffer a concussion often do not lose consciousness. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a victim who experiences one or more of the following symptoms after an injury accident should get medical attention right away:
• Slurred speech
• Weakness, numbness or decreased coordination
• Headache that gets worse and does not go away
• Repeated vomiting or nausea
• Convulsions or seizures
• Problem recognizing people or places
• Unusual behavior
• Loss of consciousness
