New Studies Link Traumatic Brain Injuries to Greater Risk of Alzheimer’s

brainThere are many serious symptoms that catastrophic brain injury victims may suffer. Recent medical research has discovered a number of future symptoms that may also result from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A study by the University of California-San Francisco has made a connection between TBI and Alzheimer’s. The study, involving older war veterans, found that injured victims of TBI are twice as likely to suffer from dementia later in life.
According to USA Today, the study involved 300,000 veterans over the age of 55. The report states that the risk of dementia was 15 percent in those with a TBI diagnosis, compared with 7 percent in those who had never had a TBI. In some cases, victims of serious head injuries may even suffer from Alzheimers earlier in life than those who did not suffer a TBI. It is not clear if this new research will help spur the medical community to develop new forms of therapy that inhibit adverse future effects of catastrophic head injuries.
Approximately 1.7 million people in the United States suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. These types of injuries may occur as the result of a falling accident, a construction accident or even a car accident. It is important that injured victims of catastrophic head injuries obtain skilled and quality legal representation to increase their chances of receiving fair and full compensation for the injuries and losses they have suffered. Failure to do so may result in an inadequate settlement that does not take into consideration damages such as cost of rehabilitation and expenses related to continued care and treatment. These expenses can run into millions of dollars during the life span of a brain-injured victim.
