MTA Bus Involved in Brooklyn Pedestrian Fatality

A pedestrian was killed after an MTA bus that swerved around a broken-down vehicle in Brooklyn toppled a light pole, which fell and crushed him. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the 59-year-old victim died two days after he was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries to his head and body. Officials say the bus driver was attempting to get around a disabled vehicle on Eastern Parkway near Utica Avenue in Crown Heights when the bus’s side mirror hit the pole. This caused it to come down on to the pedestrian who happened to be walking by.

Ongoing Investigation

His wife told the Daily News that her husband was walking home from a birthday party with her and a few friends when the incident occurred. All of a sudden, they heard a bang and then found the pole on top of the man. The bus driver was not immediately charged, but the incident is still being investigated.

Police said the deceased victim lived about a mile from where he was struck. MTA officials said the bus driver involved has been removed from passenger service while the incident is under investigation. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends. They are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dangers Faced by Pedestrians

In New York City, many factors cause or contribute to pedestrian accidents and injuries. In this particular case, a bus driver who attempted to navigate his way around a disabled vehicle, ended up knocking down a light pole that fell and crushed the pedestrian. In such cases, a thorough investigation is required into what caused the driver to take those actions. An evaluation of the driver’s experience, skill and abilities is also important.

Reckless and negligent (careless) drivers are the biggest threats pedestrians in New York City face. However, they also face other dangers such as getting struck by debris from construction sites. We’ve had several cases over the last two years where pedestrians have been hit and killed by pieces of building facades that fell from above. Regardless of how pedestrians are injured, they have the right to seek compensation for their injuries, damages and losses. Injured pedestrian accident victims and families that have lost loved ones have the right to hold negligent (careless) parties accountable.
