Mailman Seriously Injured in Long Island Car Accident

A postal worker suffered major injuries in a Long Island collision with a car after he was hit while loading his bag into his truck. According to an NBC news report, the incident occurred on Prairie Drive in North Babylon. A car struck the worker from behind and then hit the mail truck and a fire hydrant before slamming into a telephone pole. A neighbor said he heard two booms and ran out to help the injured mailman. He found that the victim’s leg was completely severed and lay on the street about 10 feet away. The man was conscious and told the neighbor to call his wife.

He was transported to an area hospital by helicopter. His condition has been listed as critical. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and was questioned by police. He was charged with reckless driving. Police have still not said what caused the crash, but neighbors say speeding is a major issue at the location. The neighbor who came to the mailman’s aid told NBC that the situation is so bad on that street that he bought a speed gun and has clocked cars traveling well beyond the speed limit. He says some motorists do over 70 mph on the street where the posted speed limit is 30 mph.
The Dangers of Speeding
New York’s Basic Speed Law states that “a person shall not drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” New York has what is known as an “absolute” speed limit law. This means if the sign says 30 mph and you drive 31 mph or more, you have violated the law.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), excessive speed was a factor in 9,262 fatal traffic accidents in 2014. The consequences of speeding can be far-reaching. There is –
• Greater risk for loss of vehicle control.
• Reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment such as seatbelts.
• Increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger.
• Increased degree of crash severity leading to more significant injuries.
Speeding is a type of aggressive driving behavior. Here are some of the reasons, according to NHTSA, that drivers tend to speed. Drivers may respond to traffic congestion by using aggressive driving behaviors, including speeding, changing lanes frequently, or becoming angry with anyone who they believe impedes their progress. People tend to speed when they are running late whether it’s for an appointment, meeting or picking up their children.
Compensation for Victims
Individuals who have been injured in a car accident or pedestrian accident as the result of a speeding or reckless driver may be able to receive compensation for the injuries, damages and losses sustained. Victims can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. It is important for victims involved in such incidents to get prompt medical attention, treatment and care.
