Four people and two police officers were injured in a two-car collision at Dudley Avenue and Clove Road in Sunnyside. According to a news report in The Staten Island Advance, the officers were responding to an emergency call at the time of the traffic crash. Police officials said the officers made a U-turn at Dudley Avenue and Clove Road and hit a 2011 Chevy Cruze. The six people, including the other driver and a pedestrian, were taken to local hospitals. All suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), there were 315,377 traffic accidents in 2010. The accidents accounted for 1,119 fatalities and 134,151 injury collisions in all. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on an average, about 360 people are killed in police-related accidents each year. PursuitWatch.org, a nonprofit that advocates for safer police pursuits, reports that police pursuits can threaten public safety and cause millions of dollars in property damage every year.
Police officers have the difficult and challenging task of pursuing those who break the law while keeping public safety in mind. The tragedy of police pursuits is that often times, innocent bystanders are severely injured or killed – simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police agencies typically adopt a written policy when it comes to police pursuits and responding to emergencies. Although civilian vehicles are required to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles that are en route to a call, police and other emergency vehicles also have a duty to exercise due care and caution especially at street intersections where such accidents are more likely to occur.
Those involved in a traffic accident caused by someone else’s negligence may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, loss of wages and benefits, medical bills, hospitalization costs, physical therapy, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
