Fatal Long Island Car Accident Marks “100 Deadliest Days”

Isabel Carella, 17, was killed in a car accident on Long Island after the Ford Mustang in which she was a passenger and a Jeep Wrangler collided. According to an NBC New York news report, two other teens were also badly injured in this crash near Indian Head Road and Carldon Road in Commack. The two vehicle collision involved a driver who lost control, the article stated.

Fatality and Major Injuries

The driver of the vehicle in which Carella was riding suffered major injuries, and police say that this driver may have been distracted at the time and lost control. Two other passengers in that vehicle were also injured. Carella, who was in the front seat, died on impact. The driver of the other vehicle, 19, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police don’t believe excessive speed was a factor in this fatal crash. According to the article, Carella was to graduate high school in a few days. We offer our deepest condolences to her family for their tragic loss and wish the others who were injured the best for a speedy and complete recovery. The investigation in this case is ongoing.

Deadly Time for Teen Drivers

The period from Memorial Day to Labor Day are known as the “100 Deadliest Days,” when according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), more than 30% of the fatalities involving teen drivers occur. Officials warned at the start of this month that this summer may prove to be even more dangerous for teen drivers as the 100 Deadliest Days coincides with what is expected to be a busier summer driving season than last year.

AAA expects “two years’ worth of pent-up travel demand” because of the coronavirus pandemic, to be unleashed in the coming months. This, they say, means more traffic on the roadways, which raises the risk of crashes, particularly for young, inexperienced drivers.

Each year about 2,063 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes and 642 of those (31%) occurred between Memorial Day and Labor Day. More than 7,124 people died in teen-related summertime crashes from 2011 to 2020. Some of the most common causes of these accidents include impaired driving and distracted driving.

Cell phones are also a common factor in deadly accidents involving teen drivers. According to AAA, many teens admit to interacting with their phone and in-car infotainment systems while behind the wheel.
