Driver Charged in Brooklyn Crash That Left 14 People Injured

Car AccidentOfficials have charged a woman who they say triggered a collision between several vehicles including an MTA bus at a Brooklyn intersection that left at least 14 people injured. According to an ABC7 news report, the car accident occurred the night of May 28. A 23-year-old woman in a sedan rear-ended a minivan at the intersection of Essex Street and New Lots Avenue, police said, adding that the impact sent the sedan into the intersection where it struck another vehicle. An MTA bus then hit the sedan, it was alleged.

Ongoing Crash Investigation

At least 14 people suffered injuries. One person, a 44-year-old female passenger in the sedan, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. The other injured victims — nine men and four women — were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. However, the nature and extent of their injuries is not known.

The driver of the sedan identified as 23-year-old Chandiana Jean, was arrested and charged with possession of a forged instrument and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle. Neighbors told ABC7 that the intersection where this crash occurred would be a lot safer if stop signs were replaced with traffic lights. It is not clear how many passengers were on the bus. The investigation is still ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the injured victims of this horrific crash. We wish them all the very best for a quick and full recovery.

If You Have Been Injured

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident involving a car or a bus, there are several steps you should take to protect your legal rights. First, it is important that you file a report and ensure that your account of the incident gets into the official report. Get as much information as you can from the scene including names and contact information for fellow passengers, name of the bus driver, photographs from the scene, etc.

Preserve physical evidence from the scene such as torn or bloody clothing. If you are injured and unable to collect information, ask a friend or family member if they can do that for you. Your personal injury lawyer can also help gather this evidence. Get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries. Preserve all invoices and receipts related to the incident and your injuries. Contact an experienced New York City car accident lawyer who will fight for your rights and help secure just compensation for all your losses stemming from the injury accident.

Injured victims of car accidents can seek compensation from responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim. Auto accidents have the potential to cause severe or even catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, facial and eye injuries, etc.
