Construction Machinery Accident A 49-year-old worker was killed in a construction site accident when he was crushed by machinery. According to Akron News Now, the accident occurred at a construction site on Eerie Street in Akron near Haymaker Parkway. The man was crushed between a backhoe and a pile of concrete slabs. The worker was taken to a local hospital, but he had suffered life-threatening injuries and died several hours later. Medical examiners determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma to his pelvis. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the accident. It is not known how the man got stuck between the backhoe and the concrete slabs.
The New York City Department of Buildings reported that there was a 28 percent drop in construction accidents in 2010, which may be due to the state tightening its regulations at worksites. However even with this improvement, construction remains the most dangerous job in the country. There were 157 construction accidents in the state in 2010 and four of these accidents were fatal. Falls, machinery malfunctions, building collapses, scaffolding accidents and electrocution are just some of the potential hazards on a construction site.
The machinery found on construction sites can be complicated to use and extremely dangerous if not handled properly. It is the employer’s responsibility to make sure their employees are properly trained with regard to how to use materials and machinery. Employers must provide all necessary safety equipment such as goggles, vests and hard hats. In addition to providing training and equipment, employers are also responsible to make sure all machinery is working properly. In addition, owners, general contractors and others at the worksite may also be responsible and could be sued for large sums of money.
Injuries suffered at the workplace can range from minor to moderate or serious to severe. Construction accident injuries may include broken bones, back and neck injuries, brain damage, and limb amputations. In some cases, construction site accidents can result in death. An injured worker or the family of a deceased construction accident victim can file for workers compensation benefits. Injured victims may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical bills, hospitalization costs, physical therapy, lost wages and benefits, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
