According to a news report in DNAinfo.com, the injury construction accident occurred when the man was working on a project in the 4, 5, and 6 subway tunnels early morning on April 18, 2011. The man was transported to a local hospital with injuries, but he is expected to survive. No further information was available.
It is indeed fortunate that this construction worker did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Hopefully, he will make a complete recovery from whatever injuries he has sustained.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), falls are the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry. OSHA statistics show that there was an average of 362 fatal falls each year from 1995 to 1999 with the trend on the increase.
Employers are required to provide a safe environment for workers. Any construction site has its inherent dangers and risks. But there are many steps construction companies, contractors or sub-contractors can take to make sure the site is safe for workers. For example, covering or guarding floor holes as soon as they are created is a good way of making sure that no one falls through them. It is important to cover openings or holes right away. Fall prevention systems such as guardrails, safety nets or other fall arrest devices are important as well.
In such cases injured employees can seek workers compensation benefits to cover medical expenses, lost wages and other related expenses. However, there are some cases where the injured worker can seek additional compensation from a third party such as a general contractor, sub-contractor or manufacturer of a defective product.
