Bus Accident in the Bronx Leaves 36 People Injured

A school bus carrying bus drivers who work for New York City’s summer kids’ programming overturned and crashed in the Bronx the morning of July 21 leaving 36 city workers injured. According to a news report, the bus accident occurred early morning in Throgs Neck after the driver of the bus lost control while turning at an exit of the Hutchinson River Parkway. Three people suffered serious injuries requiring hospitalization. No children were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Potential Causes

Mayor Eric Adams said no one on board had suffered life-threatening injuries and that those who suffered serious injuries were in stable condition. Aerial footage from the scene showed a number of adults sprawled out on the grass near the overturned vehicle. All 36 on board were injured. All victims were treated at scene. It was not clear where the bus was headed. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was injured in this bus accident. We wish them all the very best for a quick and full recovery. Our law firm was contacted to represent one of the injured victims.

Based on this news report, it is not quite clear what caused the bus driver to lose control of the vehicle. However, in such cases it is important to look into whether the driver may have been impaired, fatigued, distracted or otherwise negligent (careless) at the time of the crash. It is also important to understand whether the driver suffered a medical episode that was triggered by some underlying health condition.

In such cases, it is important to determine if there was some type of mechanical malfunction that caused the bus to go out of control. If the bus driver here is determined to have been negligent (careless), both the driver and his or her employer can be held financially responsible for the injuries damages and losses caused.

If You Have Been Injured

If you or a loved one has been injured in a bus accident, there are several steps you should take to protect your legal rights. First, it is important that you file a report and ensure that your account of the incident gets into the official report. Get as much information as you can from the scene including names and contact information for fellow passengers, name of the bus driver, photographs from the scene, etc.

Preserve physical evidence from the scene such as torn or bloody clothing. If you are injured and unable to collect information, ask a friend or family member if they can do that for you. Your personal injury lawyer can also help gather this evidence. Get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries. Preserve all invoices and receipts related to the incident and your injuries. Contact an experienced New York City bus accident lawyer who will fight for your rights and help secure just compensation for all your losses stemming from the injury accident.

Injured victims of bus accidents may seek compensation from the bus company and/or other responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim. Bus accidents have the potential to cause severe or even catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, facial and eye injuries, etc.
