57 People Injured in Tour Bus Accident on New York Thruway

A tour bus headed for Niagara Falls veered off the New York State Thruway in central New York, before rolling over and injuring all 57 occupants. According to a USA Today news report, the bus landed on its side in the grass along the highway’s westbound lane near Weedsport, a village about 25 miles west of Syracuse.

Serious Injuries Reported

State police said around 57 people were on board and all were transported to area hospitals for injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to serious. It is not clear at this time why this bus accident occurred. Police photos showed papers and other items strewn around the bus as it rested on the shoulder of the roadway.

The bus was traveling to Niagara Falls from Poughkeepsie in the Hudson Valley. The son of one of the victims said his mother was taken to the hospital with glass in her eye and needs back surgery for her injuries. She is expected to survive. State police identified the bus operator as a company based out of Poughkeepsie.

USA Today reports that the bus company had a satisfactory safety rating with involvement in one non-injury crash prior to this one in the past 24 months, according to online records of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The earlier crash on Sept. 16, 2019, occurred on the New Jersey Turnpike and involved four vehicles, but it is not clear who was at fault. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the injured victims of this bus crash. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

If You Have Been Injured

If you or a loved one has been injured in a bus accident, there are several steps you should take to protect your legal rights. First and foremost, it is important that you file a report and ensure that your account of the incident gets into the official report. Get as much information as you can from the scene including names and contact information for fellow passengers, name of the bus driver, photographs from the scene, etc.

Preserve physical evidence from the scene such as torn or bloody clothing. If you are injured and unable to collect information, ask a friend or family member if they can do that for you. Your personal injury lawyer can also help gather this evidence. Get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries. Preserve all invoices and receipts related to the incident and your injuries. Contact an experienced New York bus accident lawyer who will fight for your rights and help secure just compensation for all your losses stemming from the injury accident.

Injured victims of bus accidents may seek compensation from the bus company and/or other responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim. Bus accidents have the potential to cause severe or even catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, facial and eye injuries, etc.
