12 People Injured in Harlem Pedestrian Accident Triggered by Collision

At least 12 victims were injured in a pedestrian accident after an MTA bus collided with an SUV in Harlem the afternoon of July 1. According to a PIX11 news report, police say the driver of the SUV suffered a medical episode, which caused him to hit the accelerator and slam into the bus, jump the curb and hit several pedestrians on East 125th Street near Park Avenue. The bus was in service at the time of collision. However, it is not known if any passengers in the bus were injured.

Horrific Crash
One woman who was at the scene told PIX11 that the SUV was coming toward her and that there was a “loud boom” after the vehicle hit the bus. The SUV missed her, but slammed into two other pedestrians on the sidewalk, the woman said. Witnesses rushed to the SUV to pull a female passenger to safety. The passenger was also injured.
The SUV’s driver had to be extricated from the vehicle by first responders with the Jaws of Life. FDNY reported that they took 11 patients to hospitals where two remained in critical condition. All are expected to survive. The driver of the bus wasn’t cited. NYPD is still investigating the crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was injured in this collision.
Recent Pedestrian Accidents Raise Concerns
The spate of recent vehicle collisions with pedestrians is becoming a worrisome issue for city officials. In May, a driver deliberately plowed down several pedestrians in crowded Times Square. City officials have introduced a new bill that would require bollards, which are raised concrete or metal posts, to be placed at locations such as schools, pedestrian plazas and particularly dangerous intersections. The Times Square incident injured 20 people and killed an 18-year-old tourist.
In June, minutes after the bill was proposed, two other pedestrians were injured when an SUV jumped the curb on 37th Street, near Ninth Avenue. The bill specifies that bollards should be installed annually near at least 50 schools and 20 priority intersections, which would be identified by the city’s Department of Transportation as crash-prone areas where pedestrians have been injured or killed, or have a high volume of traffic. The bill also requires bollards to be placed around all pedestrian plazas.
Injuries and Damages
Pedestrian accidents often result in major if not fatal injuries such as brain damage, spinal cord trauma, broken bones and internal organ injuries. Injured victims may require extensive treatment and rehabilitative therapy. In some cases they may not recover completely even after treatment. Some victims are unable to ever return to work or earn a livelihood and they suffer lifelong disabilities.
Depending on the circumstances and the nature of the injuries and damages, injured pedestrians may be able to seek compensation from the at-fault parties involved. Victims may seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
