New York News Agency Investigates Dangerous Intersection

A dangerous intersection in Queens was recently investigated by a local news station, which found that motorists often ignore the rules of the road in the area, which, in some cases, has lead to serious injury car accidents. According to NY1.com, the intersection at Vleigh Place and 72nd Avenue has had five serious injury accidents in four years, which prompted the news agency to launch its own investigation. The reporter found several motorists blowing through a stop sign at the intersection.
Because of a significant blind spot on 72nd Street, it is difficult to see any oncoming cars. The reporter also found that drivers often ignore the stop sign to try and race through the intersection to beat oncoming traffic. Neighbors said they have seen several accidents at the intersection. Some residents say the city should install a traffic light, speed bump, or hanging red light to better control the area. The Department of Transportation reported that they investigated the intersection two years ago after a request was made that a four-way stop sign or a traffic light should be installed. The DOT concluded neither was needed.
Government agencies are required to ensure that all roadways, highways, and expressways under their jurisdiction are safe for motorists. This includes making sure there is proper lighting, signage, road conditions and that all intersections and crossings have clear visibility. When a roadway or intersection is dangerous, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway can be held liable for accidents that occur. If it is found that the agency responsible for maintaining the road did not take any action to make it safe, that agency could be held liable for injuries and damages.
