A woman was seriously injured in a bicycle accident after she was struck by a tractor-trailer at a Midtown intersection. According to a Streetsblog.org news report, the 53-year-old truck driver was driving a tractor-trailer southbound on Second Avenue early morning on Jan.14 when he struck the 46-year-old bicyclist as he turned right onto East 57th Street.
It’s not clear if the bicyclist was also turning onto East 57th Street of if she was already on the crosstown roadway. Police initially said the woman was transported to NY-Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition with severe leg injuries, but later said she was in stable condition. A witness had told Streetsblog that the woman’s leg had been severed from her body as a result of the impact. However, it is not known if she lost her leg as a result of this collision. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim.
Truck Had History of Violations
The tractor-trailer involved in the crash, according to Streetsblog, had been nabbed by city speed cameras three times and was also caught running a red light once since July 2023. It is unclear if the driver in this recent crash had been driving the truck when it racked up those violations. The intersection where this bicycle accident occurred is also one of the city’s busiest where eight crashes occurred in 2025 that left four pedestrians and two drivers injured, according to city data. In the last five years, that intersection has seen 69 reported crashes injuring 42 people including nine bicyclists and 11 pedestrians. The investigation into this crash is still ongoing and no arrests have been reported yet.
Leg Injuries in Bicycle Accidents
Leg injuries are among the most common and severe injuries suffered by victims of bicycle accidents. Because a bicyclist’s legs are exposed and often take the first impact during a collision, they are highly vulnerable when crashes occur with motor vehicles, road obstacles or even uneven surfaces, etc. Common leg injuries include fractures to the femur, tibia or fibula, as well as knee injuries such as torn ligaments and damaged cartilage. Soft tissue injuries, including bruises, deep cuts and muscle strains are also common in bicycle accidents, and can cause long-term pain if not treated properly.
In high-impact accidents, bicyclists may suffer complex fractures that require surgery, metal implants and lengthy rehabilitation. Even less severe injuries can limit mobility, making it difficult for victims to work, exercise or perform daily activities. Road rash on the legs, caused by sliding across pavement, can lead to infections and permanent scarring. Recovery from leg injuries often involves physical therapy and extended rest, placing significant emotional and financial strain on victims.
