Top Five Summer Injury Risks for Children

Posted in Personal Injury and tagged by Ken Wilhelm

summerkids The summer months are a great time to spend with family and friends. This is usually when many of us take road trips, go camping or host backyard parties and barbecues. However, it is important to remember that summer is also the time of year when there is an increased risk of serious injuries especially for young children from such outdoor activities.
Pediatricians say this is a time of year when there needs to be a high degree of vigilance with respect to children. According to the journal Pediatrics each year one in three child deaths worldwide and more than 12,000 child fatalities in the United States are accidental. More than 30 children died each day in the United States. Also, every year, 9.2 million children visit the emergency room for treatment of injuries.

Common Yet Dangerous Summer Injuries
Here are the top five leading causes of injuries and fatalities among children that occur during the summer season:
1. Drowning: A child drowning may occur at any time, any place within a matter of minutes. Often in these types of incidents, the child drowns quietly and without making any sounds that would alert others. Property owners should pay special attention to the safety features in the pool area such as fences, gates and alarm systems – layers of protection that go a long way in preventing these tragedies. Summer is also the time when children participate in recreational camps. Organizers of these summer programs have a duty and an obligation to keep your children safe by providing adequate supervision at all times.
2. Burn injuries: Fire-related injuries are responsible for 9.1 percent of unintentional deaths among children worldwide, according to a recent article in the journal Pediatrics. Property owners should make sure smoke and fire alarms work on their properties. Children should be closely supervised during cookouts and camps.
3. Falls: Almost 2.8 million children each year are injured as a result of fall-related injuries, globally. Bicycle accident injuries to children and adolescents result in 26,000 traumatic brain injuries worldwide each year. Younger children may become injured while playing or as a result of defective nursery products or faulty playground equipment.
4. Traffic accidents: In the year 2009 alone, more than 1,300 children ages 14 and younger died and 179,000 were injured as occupants in car crashes nationwide. In fact, studies have shown that traffic accidents are the leading cause of death and permanent disability for children over the age of 5.
5. Poisoning: Globally, poisoning results in 3.9 percent of all deaths and here in the United States, more than 300 children are treated each day and two die every day as a result of poisoning.
