The holidays are a wonderful time of the year when most of us get together with family and friends. Unfortunately, the holidays are also a time when we see a number of car accidents in New York City. There are several precautions we can take as drivers to protect ourselves from serious injury, or worse, a horrific tragedy this Thanksgiving holiday. Here are a few tips that you may find helpful this holiday season.
First, whether you are hitting the road or heading to grandma’s, please make sure you are not driving distracted. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, use of a handheld electronic device such as a cell phone is the leading cause of distracted driving accidents.
Remember, police in New York State will be conducting enhanced enforcement operations called “Operation Hang-Up” this Thanksgiving weekend. This targets motorists who use their cell phones and other electronic devices while driving. Governor Cuomo says officials want to send a clear message to New York’s drivers: “Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.”
Drunk drivers constitute another major roadway hazard for drivers during the Thanksgiving holiday. Many of us believe that New Year’s Eve is the night when the most DUI crashes occur. But, in fact, New Year’s Eve runs a distant second to the holiday that statistically has the highest number of DUI fatalities in the United States – Thanksgiving. If you are planning to consume alcohol at Thanksgiving dinner, please remember to take a cab home or seek the help of a designated driver. If you see someone driving erratically on the roadway, please alert authorities.
Please do not venture out in bad weather this weekend. If you must do so, remember to maintain adequate distance between you and the vehicle ahead. Drive at or below the speed limit when visibility is low. Please make sure that your vehicle is in good condition including your windshield wipers, tires and brakes.
