Summer is in full swing, which means pool days, barbecues and beach outings for many New York families. It is important to be well versed when it comes to water safety to make sure you and your family can enjoy a safe and happy summer. Drowning is a real danger for children, even among children who know how to swim. Often times, it happens quickly and silently. In some cases, a child can drown in under two minutes.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 10 people die every day because of an unintentional drowning. Of those victims, two are children. Children between the ages of 1 and 4, minorities and males are most at risk for drowning. The CDC reported that drowning remains the second leading cause of death for children under age 14, right after auto accidents.
Common Causes of Drowning
Drowning can cause devastating injuries and in the worst cases, death. Children who survive a drowning incident can suffer brain or nerve damage because of the lack of oxygen going to their brain. In some cases, the effects are permanent and mean a lifetime of therapy and rehabilitation.
Lack of supervision is one of the most common causes of drowning accidents, but there are steps parents can take to ensure their child’s safety this summer. According to Kids Health.org, all children should be supervised by parents at all times. Children should not go into a backyard where there is a pool alone. Parents and property owners in general should put up gates around pools with working locks to keep children out when there is no adult present.
Drowning Prevention
Children should never run around a pool. Children should always swim with a friend and never venture into water that is too deep for their skill level. Avoid jumping or pushing others in the pool. Don’t rely on flotation toys as a life saving device. Parents should also teach their children how to swim properly and talk to them about water safety. All adults supervising children at the pool should also learn how to administer CPR in case there is an emergency.
