Staying Safe on the Road this Thanksgiving

Posted in Personal Injury and tagged by Ken Wilhelm

ThanksgivingThanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year when many of us travel to spend time with loved ones. However, Thanksgiving is also that time of the year when the roadways are extremely unsafe. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 91 percent of holiday travel is done in personal vehicles or passenger vehicles. The average distance traveled per person during the Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Year holidays is 245 miles. When more people hit the road, there is of course an increased chance for hazardous road conditions.

Safe Thanksgiving Travels
There are several tips travelers would be well advised to take this Thanksgiving holiday:
• Be prepared. It is a good idea to create a car safety kit. Holiday driving often includes the threat of dangerous winter weather. Snow and ice can lead to accidents, road closures, long delays or even car troubles. Basics for a car kit include a blanket, flashlight, extra batteries, radio, first-aid kit, jumper cables and non-perishable food items.
• Make sure your vehicle is ready. Check your vehicle’s fluid levels, wipers and tire pressure. Check the condition of your tires. If you plan on driving through severe winter weather, consider getting snow tires.
• Watch your speed. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination so that you are not rushing. Speeding increases the risk of a crash.
• Get enough rest. Fatigued driving also increases the risk of a car accident. Make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep before you embark on your journey. If you feel drowsy while driving, take turns with others or pull over and rest until you feel fresh again.
• Drop distractions. Do not text or talk on a cell phone while driving. Map your trip before you leave. Fumbling with the GPS can also be distracting.
• Designate a sober driver. Do not drive after drinking alcoholic beverages. Designate a sober driver to take you home or take a cab. If neither is possible, stay at the location until you are sober.
