Seven Pool Safety Tips Every Homeowner Should Remember This Summer

swimmingpool If you are a property owner in New York, now that warm weather is here, it is important that your property, especially your swimming pool, is ready for summer guests, particularly children. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 43,000 people each year are injured in and around swimming pools in the United States. More than 600 people drown in home or public pools. If you have a pool in your backyard, it is critical that you make sure that it’s safe for visitors and guests as well as your own family members.

Staying Safe in the Pool This Summer
Here are seven tips to ensure that your swimming pool is safe this summer:
1. Do not allow a child to swim alone or unsupervised. If you are having a gathering at home, take the step of hiring a lifeguard. It’s well worth it.
2. Keep lifesaving equipment such as throwing rope with rings, reaching poles and rescue hooks near the pool.
3. Do not allow bottles, toys or other potentially hazardous items near the swimming pool area.
4. Remember the “layers of protection” rule. Make sure your pool is surrounded by a fence with a gate that can be locked. It’s also a good idea to invest in pool sensors that can detect bodies underwater.
5. Inspect your above ground pool periodically for signs of wear and tear. Look for rips in the liner and other damage from inside the pool.
6. Use door alarms, locks and safety covers when the pool is not in use.
7. Make sure the area around the pool is not slippery. Slip-and-fall accidents around the pool are also common and can result in serious injuries.
Liability Issues
If you have a swimming pool on your property, it is a good idea to purchase additional liability insurance to make sure you are covered in the event of a pool accident or some other loss. Injured victims of swimming pool accidents can file a premises liability claim against the property owner seeking compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injury, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Swimming pool accidents may result in fatalities. Near-drowning incidents may cause catastrophic brain injury because oxygen is cut off to the brain when the victim is submerged.
