Days after last week’s heavy snowstorm, many New York pedestrians are still
having to deal with dangerous sidewalks and walkways. According to a CBS New York report, one person posted a comment on Twitter drawing attention particularly to the pedestrian path on the Willis Avenue Bridge between the Bronx and Manhattan serving thousands a day, especially those making deliveries and commuting. The New York City Department of Sanitation has said it had workers out during the weekend to clear pedestrian ways.
The department’s first priority during a snowstorm is to clear roadways for emergency vehicles. Some pedestrians in the city say sidewalks need more attention from building owners. One person said the sidewalks were so heaped with snow that he tripped and fell, while another stated that the ice posed serious slip-and-fall or trip-and fall hazards. In many cases, the city leaves it to landlords and business owners to keep sidewalks clear or they risk being fined.
Common Injuries When You Slip and Fall
Here are some of the common injuries suffered in slip-and-fall or trip-and-fall accidents on snow or ice:
Broken bones: Bone fractures are among the most common injuries sustained in a slip-and-fall accident. The older you are, the more likely you are to break a bone after a slip-and-fall or trip-and-fall accident. While broken bone injuries are not often life threatening, they require extensive treatment and rehabilitation, the cost of which may add up very quickly.
Sprains and strains: People who slip and fall on ice or snow instinctively put their arms out to try and cushion their fall. This might cause the ligaments in the wrist or ankles to tear during a fall. Because ligaments typically do not receive a lot of blood, sprains and strains can take a long time to heal. Such injuries may not seem serious, but typically affect the victim’s ability to carry out routine or daily activities.
Knee injuries: The knees are among those body parts that are most vulnerable during a slip and fall accident. When you injure your knee and suffer a serious injury such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, it may take a long time to heal. Many people may require surgery and sometimes, even that will not fully heal the damage.
Spinal cord damage: When you slip and fall on your back, there is a greater likelihood of suffering a spinal injury. A serious injury to the spine has the potential to result in permanent damage such as paralysis. Such injuries are permanent and often require costly treatment, equipment and round-the-clock care.
Brain injuries: When someone slips or trips and falls and hits his or her head on the ground, there is the potential for traumatic brain injuries. Such injuries may range from concussions to skull fractures. Any type of head injury requires immediate medical care and attention. These types of injuries may also be permanent and leave a person disabled and in need of ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.
Soft tissue injuries: These are injuries to parts of your body such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. While these types of injuries also are not life threatening, they may need extensive treatment and rehabilitation, which may prove costly.
