Revel Suspends Service in New York City After Second Fatal Crash

Revel has shut down its operations in New York City after a second rider died recently. According to a CBS New York news report, Mayor Bill de Blasio now says the city will not allow the moped-sharing company to reopen unless it can make its service safer. While there are still Revel mopeds parked on the road, anyone attempting to open the app is informed right away that the service has been suspended.

Revel’s services were introduced in Manhattan and in the Bronx earlier promoting a greener and cheaper way to travel. But CBS reports that the city may not have properly regulated the company and how its service was being run. Over the last few months, there have been a number of reports on safety issues and how Revel riders may be disregarding the law by riding on sidewalks, not wearing helmets, running red lights and driving in parks and highways where they are not permitted.

Fatalities and Injuries

A little over a week ago, a local TV reporter was killed while riding as a passenger on a Revel moped in Greenpoint. Just a week after that incident, a 32-year-old man riding in Queens died when he may have failed to properly navigate his moped. He ended up striking a light pole within a center median. These fatalities also follow a string of accidents, some of which have left at least two men in critical condition.

Doctors at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx say they are seeing a lot more serious injuries including bone fractures, head injuries and concussions that may have happened as a result of Revel accidents. Revel is facing more than a dozen lawsuits in New York for these types of injuries. The company has been allowing users to rent mopeds with just a driver’s license and an optional learning course.

Mayor De Blasio said riders here have been using a vehicle that runs much like a motorcycle – but without having to get the vehicle-specific license for a motorcycle. He said this situation is “unacceptable” and that the company should not operate unless they come up with a way to make these mopeds safe. Revel has said it is currently reviewing safety measures and is communicating with the city. It hasn’t shut down service in other cities where it is operating.

Liability Issues

A victim who has been injured while riding a Revel moped or injured by a Revel rider may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost a loved one may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages as well.
