Queens Hit-and-Run Crash Critically Injures Pedestrian

PedestriansA 59-year-old woman crossing a Queens roadway sustained severe injuries after she was struck by a driver who officials say left the scene of the crash. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the hit-and-run collision occurred as a sedan hit the woman who was crossing Queens Boulevard at 80th Road in a marked crosswalk.

Police said the driver stopped, got out of his car to see what happened, but got right back in and drove away heading north on Union Turnpike. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The Daily News reports that Queens Boulevard is notorious as being one of the deadliest streets in the city for pedestrians. Fatalities have gone down after safety measures taken by Mayor Bill de Blasio as part of his Vision Zero initiative, which has the ambitious goal of reducing all traffic deaths in New York City to zero. However, pedestrian accidents deaths have risen over the past few months citywide.

Seeking Compensation

Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal accident is illegal under New York law. In the state of New York, any motorist involved in an accident is required to stop immediately and remain at the scene until officials arrive and then cooperate with the investigation. The law also requires drivers to try and assist the injured victim. This may be something as simple as calling 911.

When the at-fault motorist is not located, it is the hit-and-run victim who is left facing all the expenses including those associated with the treatment and recovery of his or her injuries. Please remember if a hit-and-run driver has injured you, you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy even though the driver has not been identified or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household.

There are also several steps you should take as a victim of a hit-and-run accident in New York. First and foremost, make sure you file a police report. Collect as much evidence from the scene as possible including photos and videos, contact information for eyewitnesses, etc. If you are seriously injured and are unable to do that, ask a friend, family member or your NYC personal injury lawyer if they can help get that. Seek prompt medical treatment and care for your injuries.

Any description of the hit-and-run driver or even a partial driver’s license plate may be very helpful in tracking down the driver. These are important pieces of information that may be obtained from surveillance cameras in the area or from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
