Preventing Slips-and-Fall Accidents This Winter

Slips-and-Fall AccidentsWinter means snow, sleet, and slippery surfaces. This season, please be extra careful to avoid any slip-and-fall accidents that could result in injury and put a damper on your holiday plans. Here are some tips on how you and your family can prevent falls and other related injuries this winter.
Always check the traction on your footwear. Make sure the soles of your shoes are not worn out, as this can make you more prone to slipping. Shoes and footwear designed for winter have better traction and can help maintain stability on slippery surfaces. Often times, dress shoes are slick on the bottom. When heading out for the evening, wear shoes with good traction and change into your dress shoes when you arrive at your location.
It’s time to use that salt and shovel. Make sure you put away tools, which you use to remove ice and snow around your home. If you leave them outdoors that means you’ll have to walk across a slippery surface to get to them, and that may result in a fall. Always have a cell phone handy. If you slip, fall, and injure yourself, it is always a good idea to have a cell phone close by. If you feel uncomfortable walking to your car after leaving a store or restaurant because ice has built up in the parking lot, ask for help. An employee is likely to offer you a steady arm to help you safely reach your car. Take your time when walking across slippery surfaces.
Injuries that result from a slip and fall can be minor to moderate or severe to serious. Broken bones, back injuries, head trauma, herniated discs, sprained ankles, or cuts and lacerations are examples of some injuries that may result from a slip-and-fall or trip-and-fall accident. In some cases, a victim may be able to seek compensation if the slip-and-fall occurred in a place that is expected to be safe, such as a grocery store, shopping mall, or restaurant parking lot. Businesses are expected to maintain their facilities to ensure the safety of their patrons.
