With all the recent snowstorms and effects of the polar vortex that we have experienced in New York, we seem to be in the midst of extreme weather conditions that make even everyday activities such as walking and driving absolutely treacherous. In such conditions, it is imperative for all New York to not only bundle up, but also to stay informed about the changing weather. When caught in severe weather, wearing scarves, mittens and other protective clothing may not be enough. You should always check the weather report and decide if it is advisable to head out.
Staying Safe in Inclement Weather
If you have to walk somewhere, or if you need to utilize public transportation, you must make sure that you are wearing the proper attire. The goal is to have as little skin as possible exposed to the cold wind. Make sure you have a thick pair of waterproof gloves as well as a scarf that you can pull over your mouth and nose. You should also never leave home without a hat that fully covers your ears. Last but not least, wear shoes with deep treads that can grip the sidewalk.
When walking on icy sidewalks and slick crosswalks, take small steps. Keep your eyes focused on where you are walking so that you can avoid particularly icy areas. When you have the option, choose paths that have the most foot traffic. Less busy areas are typically shoveled and salted less often than busy areas.
If you have to drive somewhere in extreme weather, please slow down. Your visibility will be limited and you may not see pedestrians or other vehicles until it too late. Give yourself plenty of space, turn your headlights on, remove all distractions and pull over if you are unable to see the road ahead. You should also make sure that your vehicle is prepared to handle the elements. Check your vehicle’s brakes and tires and make sure you have enough anti-freeze. You may also want to include a blanket, water, sand, a shovel and foodstuffs in your trunk in case you get stranded.
