As New York begins to reopen after the coronavirus pandemic, medical experts are warning pregnant women to remain vigilant against the disease. According to a USA Today report, a new study of pregnant patients with COVID-19 found higher rates of placental risks because of inadequate blood flow from the mother. The placenta is an organ that forms during pregnancy to provide oxygen and other nutrients to the fetus. It also removes waste products from the baby’s blood.
The Effects of COVID-19 on the Placenta
The study conducted by Northwestern University Medicine’s researchers was published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology and involved pregnant women with the coronavirus who delivered between March 18 and May 5. Researchers found that the women’s third trimester placentas were significantly more likely to show problems getting blood from the mother. This led to smaller placentas, to blood clots in or around the organ or caused a piece of it to die.
One patient had a stillbirth in the second trimester and another had a preterm delivery. This makes it all the more important for pregnant women to be careful during this time as places are reopening in various cities around the country. It is also crucial that their medical providers be vigilant about symptoms and test pregnant mothers for COVID-19 and diagnose it in a timely manner so it doesn’t cause the mother harm or result in birth injuries for the baby.

Our law firm helped a family secure a $43,940,000 verdict for a child who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The hospital failed to diagnose fetal distress, which led to brain damage and cerebral palsy from lack of oxygen supply to the brain. The appeals court reduced the amount because the verdict was so large. Another client secured a $2,850,000 verdict in an arm injury case (Erb’s palsy) that was reduced by the appeals court to $1,846,000, again because the verdict was so large. This was the highest amount upheld by the appellate courts for many, many years. In addition, we recovered $1,400,000 for a newborn who lost motion in the arm during birth due to the doctors applying incorrect force on the baby’s head.
In another case, our client obtained a $4,500,000 settlement where the doctor negligently used forceps to deliver a baby and cut the oxygen supply to the child’s brain. The infant suffered from cerebral palsy as a result. We were able to prove that a C-section should have been performed, which may have prevented the cerebral palsy from occurring. Also, another of our clients got a verdict for $23,500,000 in a medical malpractice case.
