pedestrian accidentA 29-year-old man was killed in a car accident, which officials say, was caused by a hit-and-run driver. According to The Wall Street Journal, the pedestrian was crossing the street when he was hit by a car whose driver fled the scene. The man suffered head injuries and was taken to the hospital, but died several hours later. Police have described the suspect vehicle as a dark green Honda that has a damaged front end. It is also possible the car is missing a passenger-side mirror.
According to the New York Department of Vehicles (DMV), there are more than 323,000 accidents in the state every year. There are about 1,220 fatalities and another 139,000 injury accidents. Nearly 14,000 of these accidents happen between the hours of midnight and 3 a.m. There are also about 16,300 accidents involving a vehicle and a pedestrian every year.
While this news report does not say what may have caused this accident, leaving the scene of a collision is illegal according to New York law. Drivers who hit another vehicle must remain at the scene until authorities arrive or, if nobody is injured, until information can be exchanged. Leaving the scene of an accident that causes an injury could result in felony charges for the suspect.
Families that lose a loved one in a fatal accident face a lifetime of grief and are also faced with expenses including funeral costs and any costs related to settling an estate. Victims’ families in some cases may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault or negligent party. Such claims usually seek compensation to cover damages including but not limited to medical expenses, lost future income, past and future suffering and funeral costs.
