Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Tractor-Trailer in Bronx Hit and Run

A 71-year-old man was killed in a hit and run crash the afternoon of Nov. 12 involving a tractor-trailer. According to a report in the Bronx Times, the man was crossing East 138th and Exterior streets in the Bronx when a white-colored tractor-trailer hit him while traveling southbound. The driver fled the scene.

NYPD officers found the elderly man lying in the roadway unconscious with head injuries. They rushed him to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is examining the circumstances of this collision. Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of this deceased pedestrian.

What to Do After a Hit and Run Crash

Under New York law, it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash. Drivers are required to stop immediately and remain at the scene of a crash. They are also required to exchange information with other parties involved and provide assistance to injured victims.

If you have been injured in a hit-and-run accident, the first thing to do is remain at the scene and wait for authorities to arrive. If you or someone else has been injured, call 911 right away so you can get medical help right away. Make sure you file a police report. The accident report will help police look for the hit-and-run driver. It will also be helpful when you file your accident claim.

Try to get as much information about the driver and the car as possible. Get the vehicle’s license plate number. It can help even it is a partial license plate number. Try to find out from witnesses where the vehicle was last seen or headed. Witnesses can be very helpful by supplying additional information. If you are injured and are not able to secure any of this information, ask a family member or friend if they can do this for you. Surveillance videos can also be very helpful in identifying or tracking down the hit and run driver.

Compensation for Hit and Run Collisions

Nationwide, statistics also show that a vast majority of hit-and-runs are caused by negligent (careless) drivers who are speeding or violating the rules of the road. Such drivers can be held financially responsible for a crash and the injuries caused, whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household.

In such cases, the at-fault driver (when identified) may face charges and penalties. In addition, he or she can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. You should retain an experienced personal injury lawyer right away to help protect your legal rights. A family who has lost a loved one in a hit-and-run crash may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well.
