New York Personal Injury Lawyer Offers Back to School Traffic Safety Tips

backtoschoolThe AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates every fall 55 million children across the United States head back to school. About 13 percent of those children typically walk or bike to school. This is why it becomes crucial for drivers to be especially vigilant for pedestrians before and after school hours. According to AAA, the afternoon hours are particularly dangerous. Just over the last decade, more than one-fourth of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Safety Tips for Drivers
There are several steps drivers can take to keep children safe:
• Watch Your Speed: There is a good reason why speed limits are posted in school zones. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.
• Stop at stop signs: More than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones, research shows. Always come to a complete stop at stop signs and consciously look for children on sidewalks and crosswalks before proceeding.
• Avoid distractions: Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your risk of a crash. Do not use your phone, eat or apply makeup while driving. Eliminate all distractions.
• Watch for bicycles: Children on bikes can be inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child bikes to school, make sure he or she always wears a properly fitted helmet.
