New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A Wilhelm Offers Five Tips for Safe Summer Travels

Posted in Personal Injury and tagged by Ken Wilhelm

Summer is a great time to take long road trips with your family members and friends.
At the same time however, this season can be hazardous owing largely to increased traffic on our roadways. Drunk drivers, distracted drivers and speeders pose additional and significant dangers on our roadways. Summer is the time when we see a number of car accidents that occur due to a variety of reasons.
Safe Summer Travels
There are several steps drivers can take to stay safe during their summer travels and ensure that they minimize their risk of getting into a car crash. Here are five tips to help you stay safe this summer.
1. Do not get distracted: Distractions not only mean talking on the cell phone or texting, but also eating and drinking, changing the CD or radio station or talking to passengers.
2. Check your tires regularly: Tire care is particularly important in the summer months because long road trips combined with higher temperatures can put additional strain on your tires. Be sure that your tires are properly inflated and avoid overloading your car. Also, watch the tread on your tires. If there is insufficient tread, change your tires. Tires that are worn out can cause serious crashes as reduce the effectiveness of a vehicle’s brakes and prevent stopping in time to avoid the collision. Make sure your vehicle is in good shape. Get it checked by your mechanic before you get on the road.
3. Never drink and drive: It is never okay to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. If you are at a summer party where alcohol is being served, please make sure that you have a designated driver or call a cab. Even if you don’t drink, watch out for erratic drivers on the roadway. Always wear your seatbelt.
4. Get adequate rest: Many drivers fail to ensure that they get a good night’s sleep before hitting the road. Drowsy driving is not only dangerous, but it is also considered negligent driving.
5. Follow the rules of the road: Make sure you do not speed or tailgate. Leave enough room between vehicles so that you have sufficient time to stop. Do not make unsafe lane changes or passes. Always stop for a red light or a stop sign. Make sure you yield the right-of-way to vehicles at intersections when appropriate and to pedestrians.
