A company that manufactures fiberglass-reinforced plastic panels in Plattsburgh, N.Y., has been cited for 31 workplace violations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). According to a news report in the Press Republican, the company faces up to $126,000 in proposed fines.
OSHA inspected the facility after employees complained about several violations taking place. OSHA investigators say these violations are extremely serious because the factory uses combustible materials and hazardous chemicals. Failure to follow safety standards leaves workers exposed to potential injury or death from fires and explosions, toxic exposure, falls and crushing injuries.
Some of the violations the company received citations for include accumulations of combustible dust, improper storage and handling of flammable liquids, lack of proper ventilation, failure to provide ample safety training for employees and lack of an emergency action plan. Officials say the company even failed to give workers personal protective equipment such as eye shields, splash guards and respiratory protection. Furthermore, the company’s injury and illness logs were incomplete.
Under federal and state law, employers are required to provide a safe working environment for their employees. Workers who are injured in industrial accidents can seek workers compensation benefits to help cover medical expenses and lost wages. However this can become a complex legal process. Claims can be denied and there have been many cases where the employer has passed on the blame to the worker.
