Three people were injured in a car accident that sent a minivan into a local pharmacy and a city housing department vehicle into scaffolding outside the building. According to a report in the New York Post, the crash occurred at 3293 Broadway near 133rd Street. The two vehicles collided at the intersection, before the minivan struck the doorway of a pharmacy and the other car hit a sidewalk shed. The car belonged to the city Department of Housing, Preservation and Development. Police, who arrived at the scene, reported several were injured.
Injured Victims Hospitalized
A person who worked at the pharmacy said they had one customer who was on his way out of the store, but that before he could step outside, a vehicle being driven by a woman rammed right into the entrance. A housing department supervisor at the scene called it a “bad intersection accident” and that the scaffolds saved the people in the store from suffering major injuries.
A woman driving the minivan and two occupants of the city vehicle were transported to area hospital. Their condition is not known. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were injured in this crash. We wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
What Causes Street Intersection Accidents?
Car accidents that occur at street intersections can be some of the most violent and deadly crashes. Depending on the nature and circumstances of the collision, street intersection accidents may result in catastrophic injuries or even fatalities. While there are many reasons why such accidents occur, they are often caused by negligent (careless) drivers.
Here are some of the common causes of street intersection accidents:
Running red lights and stop signs: When motorists fail to obey red lights and stop signs at street intersections, a fatal crash may occur. New York laws require drivers to come to a full stop at red lights and stop signs.
Failure to yield: This is one of the most common causes of street intersection collisions. Motorists must observe right-of-way laws and are required to proceed with caution at intersections. For example, drivers who turning left or making a U-turn are required to yield the right of way to oncoming vehicles and make the turn only when it is reasonably safe to do so. Failure to yield while making a turn at street intersections may lead to deadly head-on collisions and T-bone crashes (where one vehicle strikes the driver side door or passenger side door of the other).
Excessive speed: When drivers approach an intersection at a high rate of speed, they are often unable to stop their vehicle in time to avoid a collision. This may result in major rear-end collisions.
Distracted driving: When a driver is distracted or not paying attention to the road, he or she may miss a red light, stop sign or a stopped vehicle ahead. Following too closely can also result in a read-end crash at a street intersection.
