An elderly woman was severely injured in a pedestrian accident after she was struck by a driver on a Revel scooter in Columbus Circle. According to a CBS New York news report, a food truck worker who saw the aftermath told the news outlet that the scene was heartbreaking and that the woman was critically injured, having suffered a serious head injury.
Accidents Involving Revel Scooters
The 23-year-old driver of the scooter remained at the scene. Video from the
scene shows NYPD officials taking the scooter away after the scene. Police say the driver was heading south on Broadway at 60th Street when he hit the woman who was in the intersection. No charges have been filed against the driver of the Revel scooter pending an investigation.
This has been the latest incident involving Revel scooters in New York City. The moped rental company has been under scrutiny over concerns of lack of safety and lawless riding. In the first seven months of 2020 alone, there were 330 crashes with injuries involving Revel scooters, according the New York City’s Department of Transportation. The company shut down temporarily over the summer after three people died in crashes including a CBS2 reporter.
New Protocols Introduced
Revel resumed operations in New York City a month after it shut down with some new requirements and protocols. Among new protocols after these accidents, Revel now requires users to take a selfie showing they are wearing a helmet and that they complete a 30-question safety-training course. Revel said it partnered with behavioral science experts to develop a new, mandatory in-app safety training program designed to improve users’ knowledge of safety measures and compliance with those practices.
They will need to take the training quiz and watch an instructional video before they can start their first ride. The training covers topics such as rules of the road, proper pre-ride protocol as well as activities that are prohibited and the consequences of violating the rules. Revel is also rolling out a feature that any New Yorker can use with or without a company account.
Anyone can open the Revel app and report bad behavior by riders in the city. In addition, the company has said it has beefed up its suspension policies and has added more free lessons, which a person with an account can book through the app or the website. Revel accidents have resulted in a number of injuries including head injuries, back and neck injuries, broken bones, sprains and strains, etc. Some of these injuries have the potential to be fatal, as we’ve seen in several cases in New York City.
It is important to remember that pedestrian accident victims and their families may be able to seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver has not been charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
