According to a CBS New York report, the fatal collision occurred at the intersection of 65th Street and 13th Avenue near the Dyker Heights and Borough Park sections of Brooklyn. Officials say the motorcyclist was heading east on 65th Street and tried to make a left turn onto 13th Avenue when he collided with an SUV and was pinned underneath it. Paramedics took the motorcyclist to a local hospital where he died. The SUV’s driver was uninjured. No arrests or citations were reported. The crash is under investigation.
Statistics Relating to Motorcycle Accidents
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles reports that there were 5,570 motorcycle accidents statewide in 2010. Also, during the same year, 185 fatalities and 5,047 injuries were reported in New York State. A recent report released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) states that motorcycle accident injuries and fatalities cost $16 billion in 2010.
Right-of-Way Issues
Often, motorcycle accident cases that occur at street intersections involve failure to yield the right-of-way. This could happen when a driver fails to see an oncoming motorcyclist, especially when one of the motorists is attempting to make a turn. Drivers tend to consciously look out for bigger vehicles such as cars, SUVs or pickup trucks. When motorists fail to see motorcyclists or smaller vehicles at an intersection, the consequences can be devastating.
