Four Things to Remember that help Avoid Pedestrian Accidents

A Lamborghini driver sparked a chain-reaction crash in Brooklyn that left a pedestrian critically injured on the sidewalk. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the three men in the Lamborghini SUV all claimed they weren’t driving and police are still trying to figure out who was behind the wheel.

Serious Injuries

The pedestrian accident occurred when the SUV heading north on 18th Avenue crashed into a Dodge pickup truck going east on 65th Street. The impact sent the Dodge careening into a 30-year-old pedestrian who was walking in the marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was thrown against the outside of a coffee shop.

The Dodge also slammed into the coffee shop. Medics rushed the pedestrian and the 35-year-old man driving the Dodge to a local hospital. Both were said to be in critical condition, though the drive has stabilized, officials said. A parked vehicle was also hit and two other vehicles were damaged in the crash, which left behind a trail of wreckage.

Four Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

There are a number of reasons why pedestrian accidents occur in New York City. And typically, they have driver negligence (carelessness) or recklessness in common. Here are some of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents that result in serious injuries or fatalities. Recognizing and remembering these will help drivers avoid being involved in such accidents.

Excessive speed: With coronavirus-related closures, we’re seeing more open roads and more drivers who are violating posted speed limits and driving at speeds that are not safe given traffic, roadway and weather conditions. When a vehicle strikes a pedestrian at a higher rate of speed, the potential for catastrophic or fatal injuries exponentially increases.

Distracted driving: A number of recent studies have shown that smart phones are contributing to more pedestrian accidents. Drivers who fail to pay attention to the road when they are driving or are operating the vehicle while distracted tend to cause pedestrian accidents. Distractions are not limited to cell phones. Driving while eating, drinking, reading, or talking to a passenger are all examples of distractions that may result in collisions.

Carelessness while backing up: Failing to check behind the vehicle may result in pedestrians or passerby being run over. When the victims are young children, the consequences may be tragic.

Failing to yield: This is one of the main causes of pedestrian accidents in New York City. Under the law, motorists are required to come to a full stop at a crosswalk and yield the right of way to a pedestrian. Drivers are required under the law to wait for the pedestrian to safely cross the street in order to proceed. The law also requires drivers to exercise due care when it comes to pedestrians.
