Negligent and unqualified plastic surgeons pose a serious risk to patients nationwide, according to an article in USA Today. The article talks about a 32-year-old woman who died from an overdose of painkillers a day after she received an elective cosmetic surgery performed by a doctor who was not board-certified. The woman died on Valentine’s Day 2010 after having a “minimally invasive” liposuction procedure. The report states that she had levels of the painkiller lidocaine that clearly shows “a basic misunderstanding of the principles of pharmacology and patient safety.”
According to the news report, it is becoming increasingly common for doctors to expand their business to cosmetic surgery. Many of these medical professionals perform elective cosmetic surgeries because they are lucrative — not because they are specifically trained or experienced at them. The September 2011 report by USA Today cited numerous other fatal cosmetic surgeries performed by inexperienced or negligent doctors.
Doctors or hospitals that are negligent can be held liable by filing a medical malpractice lawsuit. Patients of botched cosmetic surgeries are often left with irreparable scars and disfigurement, not to mention the emotional trauma that goes with it. Victims of botched surgeries or families that have lost loved ones as a result of medical negligence can seek damages from the at-fault doctor and hospital.
