Eleven People Injured in Brooklyn MTA Bus Accident

busEleven people suffered injuries when a driver lost control of his MTA bus on a busy Brooklyn street. According to an AMNY news report, the injured victims included three people in an Uber BMW vehicle that was crossing the intersection of Ralph Avenue and East New York Avenue in Brownsville, one pedestrian struck by a light pole, two other pedestrians struck by debris and five people on the bus including the driver. Police said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Out-of-Control Bus Causes Injuries

The bus accident occurred the evening of May 19 when the driver lost control of his B-12 bus traveling east on East New York Avenue. The bus went up on the sidewalk near Ralph Avenue taking down three small trees, a street sign and striking two parked cars. The impact of the crash sent a van careening into a building. The bus then continued into the intersection on Ralph Avenue striking the Uber vehicle with two passengers inside. That brought the bus to a stop.

All injured victims were taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The bus driver’s condition was not immediately known. Despite the COVID-19 lockdowns in New York City, there were several people walking in that intersection, which typically is very busy. Those who witnessed the crash said the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed swerving in and out of lanes.

Police are looking into an allegation that the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. They are also not ruling out a medical condition. MTA officials said the police gave the driver a blood alcohol level and drug test. But results are pending and no charges have been filed at this time. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this bus accident and we wish them all a speedy and complete recovery.

Liability Issues

Based on this news report, officials have administered alcohol and drug tests to the driver and are also looking into reports that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Some witnesses have said that the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed. Driving while impaired, driving a vehicle while fatigued or operating a vehicle at an excessive rate of speed are all examples of driver negligence (carelessness). In such cases, when the bus driver is determined to have been negligent, both the driver and his or her employer can be held financially responsible for the injuries damages and losses caused.

Injured victims can take a number of steps in these types of cases in order to protect their rights. First, it is important they obtain a copy of the police report. Your personal injury lawyer can also help you secure a copy of this report, which contains important details such as time, place, location of the incident, the parties involved and often, who was at fault. Victims would be well advised to get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for their injuries. This establishes a record of the type of injuries they sustained and the treatment they received for those injuries. It is also a good idea to collect as much evidence as possible from the scene of the crash including cell phone photos and videos and contact information for witnesses. Immediately contact an experienced New York City bus accident lawyer who will be able to remain on your side, fight for your rights and help you secure maximum compensation for your losses.
